Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, is a city beach resort offering 492 beautifully appointed mountain and seaview rooms and suites, seven restaurants and bars, and a wealth of enjoyable recreational opportunities for families and leisure travellers.
As a seaside resort, we are committed to take care of the oceans and marine life through our environmental programmes. One of the programmes called for us to use less plastic in the daily running of our operations.
As a five-star resort, we provide our guests with several conveniences during their stay. Amongst them are to provide drinking water in all our guestrooms. The resort decided to stop purchasing mineral water in plastic bottles and instead, to provide our international guests with clean drinking water from glass bottles only.
In 2011, the resort embarked on a major project to start our own bottling and water filtration plant. The strict regulations of an internationally certified water bottling plant call for the use of good quality glass bottles.
We chose to buy our bottles from EcoPure Waters because their glass bottles do not contain harmful chemicals and can be heated to suitable temperatures during the cleaning process. In addition to that, the good quality glass bottles are more durable and can be used multiple times, when properly sanitised.
To date, the resort has saved at least 450,000 plastic bottles from going into the sea. We are greatly encouraged by the success of this project.
